Future Scientists

Opening young minds to scientific possibilities.

KRISP recently welcomed 24 Grade 9 learners and two facilitators from IkamvaYouth, representing four high schools in Durban’s Chesterville area, for a day of discovery, learning, and hands-on science.

The visit came as learners prepare to make subject choices that will shape their future academic and career paths, giving them a glimpse of science beyond the classroom.

Learners were introduced to DNA and genomic sequencing, while KRISP’s Masters and PhD students shared their own academic journeys and experiences of pursuing careers in science. They also put science into practice, building DNA strands using candy and extracting DNA from frozen strawberries.

“The learners have been so excited to come to KRISP and experience science in action,” said Sibonelo Mdunge, IkamvaYouth Branch Manager for the Chesterville area.

“We are very grateful to the team and sponsors for making this opportunity a reality for our learners.”

KRISP hopes such initiatives will inspire curiosity, build confidence, and encourage young learners to see themselves as the scientists of tomorrow.
